Douglas Fir

alder

Description: Douglas Fir is one of the best known wood species in the world. In British Columbia there are two varieties of Douglas Fir, Coastal - grows on the southern mainland coast of British Columbia and Vancouver Island, and Interior - found throughout southern and central BC. The Douglas fir can reach up to 85 metres in height on the coast and 42 metres in the interior.

Characteristics: Douglas Fir produces warm tones of orange red to reddish brown, with a lighter yellowish-white sapwood. Douglas Fir is generally straight-grained, although sometimes has a tendency for wavy or spiral grain to be present. Large, spaced out knots are typical of this type of wood.

Reclaimed Douglas Fir is almost exclusively first-growth timber. This aged and cured first-growth timber is a much deeper red with fewer yellow and orange tones than new second-growth Douglas Fir lumber. The grain patterns in Reclaimed Douglas Fir tend to be straighter, tighter, and more consistent than in second-growth lumber. Reclaimed Douglas Fir typically does not contain any sapwood.

Hardness: Coastal Fir – 710; Interior Western Fir – 660; Interior Northern Fir - 600

Characteristics: White pine is generally cream coloured to light reddish-brown with a white to pale yellow sapwood. There is little contrast between heart wood and sapwood. The wood is generally straight-grained with even, uniform texture with knots usually ingrown. Fine brown lines tend to appear on longitudinal surfaces due to resin ducts.
